StudioOutside and Hocker Design Group have each garnered national awards for their residential design work. This category of landscape architecture is often regarded as superfluous and reserved for a select few, but both firms are successfully translating the highly detailed nature of their residential work into their commercial efforts. Tary Arterburn, FASLA, and David Hocker, ASLA, will discuss the relevance of residential design to their respective firms and the profession as a whole.

David Hocker has 17 years of experience including a vast knowledge of horticulture, gained from the broader landscape construction and maintenance industry. His collective experience includes parks, urban plazas and streetscapes, schools, institutions, retail, hospitality, and residential. David launched Hocker Design Group (HDG) in 2005 where he approaches each project with a strong, hands-on methodology that results in a unique level of commitment and success. As lead designer he extracts influence from surrounding architecture and contextual influences to create outdoor spaces with a clear aesthetic. Creative use of sustainable materials and native or adaptive plants are integral to the design process he has established at HDG. Response to unique design challenges with a commitment to providing responsible and innovative solutions has earned HDG accolades in national and international publications, as well as twenty plus design awards in the short time since the firm’s beginning.

Tary Arterburn is one of the founding principals of Studio Outside. His design leadership merges his natural energetic spirit, which guides often experimental, and innovative design. This is evident throughout his work from the big picture through to the smallest, most precise detail. Tary’s dynamic presence, charm, and passion for building the best project for his clients possible is infused throughout the office and projects of Studio Outside. Tary’s projects includes Shangri La Botanical Garden and Nature Center, One and Two Arts Plaza, NorthPark Center Garden, Ericksson Headquarters, Hill Country Prospect, and Midtown Masterplan. Tary has received five National ASLA, and twenty-seven Texas ASLA and regional design awards. Tary has thirty-four years of rich experience in practice.
